Monash BDI-WMU Alliance in Clinical and Experimental Biomedicine

This collaborative research project is analysing the increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in hospitals in Wenzhou, China.

Lead organisation(s):

Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Monash University, Australia. Wenzhou Medical University, China.

Project type:
Research
Status:
In progress
Description:

Monash researchers have engaged with partners in Wenzhou, China to analyse the recent rise in AMR in their hospitals. In 2019, the Monash BDI-WMU Alliance in Clinical and Experimental Biomedicine was opened on the campus of Wenzhou Medical University. Initial assessments of one species of bacteria reveals that 15 years ago, less than 10 patients per annum were infected, all of which responded to off the shelf antibiotics. Last year, 990 patients had infections, with approximately 1 in 3 being AMR.

Timeframe:
The project commenced two years ago, and will run for up to five more years (depending on funding availability)
